Meet Kym
I’m not your typical hairstylist. I’m absolutely in love with all curls—whether they’re tight springs, waves, kinky, spiraled like Botticelli’s, or corkscrews. I’m completely crazy for curls. What sets me apart is the utmost respect I have for the curls that grow naturally from your head—your crown. It’s my privilege and honor to adorn your sacred chakra. I’m not afraid or intimidated by curls; I’m just deeply in love with them. As an artist, your curls are my medium, and I fall in love with each and every curl family.
“I understand that this might be your first time truly learning to care for and embrace your curls, and I know that isn’t always easy. My goal is to ignite a spark within you so that you fall in love with your curls the way I do. I’ve been told my enthusiasm is contagious, and I just want to celebrate the true you.”
I’m a seasoned soul in the world of curls.
I was the spiral perm queen back in the 80s, not just receiving perms regularly (not knowing I had my own natural curls) but also artfully wrapping piggyback perm rods and air neutralizing delicate locks. I loved making everyone curly!
I strongly opposed the flat, straight look.
It hurt every time I had to straighten a curly girl’s hair—it felt like I was going against my inner code. I didn’t believe that everyone looked beautiful with straight hair hanging limp from the scalp; it looked fake, and I despised the feeling of frying hair dead. In rebellion against the ‘Rachel’ cut, I even had my hair permed on drinking straws to achieve a super kinky look. I’ve always been crazy about curls!
Even when curly hair wasn’t popular, I was drawn to its wild, buoyant, and free spirals. I wanted my hair to be kinky curly—I felt it suited my personality better. When I trained with Deva Curl in New York in 2006, I immediately felt at home dry shaping, coloring, styling, and helping women embrace their own curls. I’d already been doing this for decades, baby!
I want everyone to love who they truly are, despite what society has tried to imprint on us.
I’ve had so many beautiful women share their curly hair struggles with me, often through tears. The struggle to embrace and be proud of natural curls is real. My mission is to shine a light on the truth about products, shampoos, and myths, but more importantly, to help YOU see the truth about your unique precious curls. Your curls are as individual as a snowflake or fingerprint. The more you practice caring for and honoring your hair, the more you’ll accept who you truly are.
This journey often gets deep. For many women, insecurities surface during this discovery time. We carry shame, self-judgment, and self-hatred in our hearts, often directed at our curls. We walk past the mirror first thing in the morning and judge our face, our hair—everything about us. Hair often bears the brunt of this: “Why is it so frizzy? I look crazy with this big hair!”
Consider this—our hair is an extension of our crown of glory, our connection to the heavens, higher realms, and consciousness. It’s our connection to the divine, to our higher selves. Hair is the physical manifestation of our spirituality. What if we showed it respect and love instead of judgment and disappointment? Let’s create loving rituals, release the past, and nurture both our hair and ourselves, our spirit or light.
I love helping people learn to be gentle with their fragile curls while achieving their goals for longer, fuller hair. But it all starts with love—loving and nurturing those tiny, broken curls, and usually the self too. I encourage and reinforce better habits to stimulate growth and strength. It often begins with the mind and heart, with how one sees herself. Gentleness is essential when rebuilding a foundation of new hair care. Self-talk needs to be rewired, and patience must flow for significant changes to take place. Growing hair is often a goal, and I believe it takes a team—starting with the two of us!
